Hauling Away a Tree
Kevin hooks up a chain to a tree that had fallen. He's about to use his Boomer Tractor to haul it out of the way.
For Kevin, using his Boomer Tractor is great therapy—and a great side business.
Kevin works at his computer from 7:30 to 5 weekdays as a poultry commodity broker. But as soon as he can get away from his desk, he climbs up on the platform of his Boomer Compact Utility Tractor to haul huge stones, rough cut his neighbors' property and grade his gravel driveway. “It’s cheaper than therapy,” Kevin jokes.
Kevin wasn't originally a "country boy." He grew up in a typical city neighborhood, and his Dad was a businessman. But he's always loved the country and working outdoors. So about 5 years ago, he bought 18 acres south of Fayetteville for himself, his wife Wendy and his son Austin.
“When I bought this land, it was all woods, so we carved out our little niche in the woods.” Using his Boomer Tractor, Kevin began clearing the rough land around the property with his rotary cutter, creating a pepper and tomato garden with his Rotary Tiller, and leveling out his 800 ft. gravel driveway with his Box Blade.
There's always plenty to do on Kevin's spread, but it was actually his New Holland Boomer Dealer who gave him the idea to start a side business with his tractor. “I do small tractor jobs for other people. There’s kind of a need for that. Grading gravel roads and clearing land with my rotary cutter are the cornerstones of my business. I’ve got jobs every weekend from March through the beginning of November. I sell rocks and firewood from my property, too. I have to turn people away, I’m so busy.”
Having a Boomer Tractor around the house also gave Kevin the opportunity to learn a unique skill. There's a creek bed on his property with tons of rocks. After a little research on the Internet, Kevin started building a massive dry stone wall near his home.
“I had to come up with something constructive and worthwhile to do with all these rocks, so I taught myself Dry Stone Masonry. That's a lost art that people brought over from England and Ireland. They used to build much smaller walls and enclosures for their sheep.
“Basically, you build a wall with no mortar. You’re building 2 parallel walls and you’re filling the middle with rubble. And occasionally, you put a stone all the way over both to tie the whole thing together. There’s nothing holding it together but gravity.”
Kevin has been using his Boomer Tractor and Loader to construct his wall over the last 4 years. It's a great showcase for the power and versatility of his tractor. Visitors are always amazed that he's been able to construct his wall with nothing but his Boomer Tractor.
“There was a rock in the creek, probably 12 ft. long and 4 ft. wide and about 20" deep and weighing about 10,000 lbs. My wife wanted that rock as the base of the wall. I managed to wiggle that rock into the loader bucket and chained it to the bucket. All I could do was drag it, it wouldn’t lift. I moved that rock about 400 ft. with the back wheels off the ground. I can’t think of anything my Boomer Tractor hasn’t been able to do.”
So, for folks who'd love to push a brand new Boomer Tractor to its limits like he does, Kevin has a word of advice: “Trust me, you’ll want to buy 10 more horsepower than you think you’ll need,” he chuckles.
