Bill & Barb's Great Life
Bill & Barb's Great Life
Bill and Barb pause amid their chores to reflect on how much they love living in the country.
How Bill & Barb traded in the big city for one big ranch.
Bill spent his entire career in the retail field, working for a major retailer and living in large cities out east. He finished his career at a corporate office in Dallas, Texas. By the time he retired, he had a great management staff and provided support for 265 stores. But now, his life is completely different.
Today, it's just Bill and his wife, Barb, living on the 76 acre Missouri farm they retired to 7 years ago. They've traded crowds and congestion for a simpler life with their 11 miniature donkeys, 3 standard donkeys, 10 miniature horses, 11 standard horses, 4 ponies, 8 dogs and 3 cats.
“We got burned out on corporate, big city congestion,” Bill explains. “Once I retired, I thought, why do I need this? Out here in the country, you have a better feeling about yourself when you’re not trying to keep up with the Joneses all the time.”
What motivates Bill and Barb these days is their love for horses and donkeys, and their inability to turn their backs on an animal in need. “We came here with 5 horses, and now we have nearly 40 horses and donkeys. Some have bad legs, one is partially blind. They would have been slaughtered if we hadn’t taken them. It’s just the care and compassion that we have. Their life may be shortened, but they’ll have a good life while they’re here.”
Bill and Barb are proud of the work they've done to create a great home for their animals. And they've done it all with the help of their trusty Boomer Compact Tractor. From their 10,000 sq.ft. barn to their 6 pastures, they've found their Boomer Tractor to be an indispensable tool.
“I use my tractor every day,” Bill says. “We are out there every day rough mowing brush, drilling posts, hauling firewood and mixing cement. We do a lot of fencing. We made 6 pastures this spring. We got a grant from the USDA to build 6 pastures and put water to them all, so we can rotate the horses from field to field. It's all fenced areas.”
Bill is impressed by how easy his Boomer Tractor is to use. He especially likes the Hydrostatic Transmission with its clearly marked controls. And the deluxe 3-Point Hitch adjusts so that he can hook up implements without having to back up and align the tractor precisely.
Bill and Barb have fallen in love with the freedom and seclusion of country life. Bill reflects, “We came up to visit some friends here in Missouri. They said, ‘look at this 76-acre farm for sale.’ We came over and looked at it and made the decision within a few days. It’s something where we said, hey, we don’t need the big city life.
“It costs us money, but we spend our money on animals while other people might spend it on tennis or golf or, you know, going on cruises. We spend our earnings on taking care of animals.“
“Like everybody says, how did you do it? Well, I think between my wife and I, we just have enjoyed it so much that we have never looked back. The animals and the farm are our life.”
